MUSKEGON, MI – September 25, 2009 – This Halloween veteran Scare-masters, MODERNCINÉ Director/Producer Andrew van den Houten and international award winning author Jack Ketchum usher Halloween in with terrifying style. MODERNCINÉ’s SCAREFEST 2009 is a frightening day-long experience showcasing the MODERNCINÉ films: “Headspace”, “The Girl Next Door”, “Home Movie” and the US premiere of the latest MODERNCINÉ feature, Jack Ketchum’s “Offspring”. Getting in the spirit of things - VIP Scare-master, composer Ryan Shore and actress Pollyanna McIntosh who stars in both “Headspace” and “Offspring” join MODERNCINÉ’s SCAREFEST 2009. Filmed primarily in Muskegon, MI – Jack Ketchum’s “Offspring” was one of the first productions to utilize the state’s Film Tax Incentives.


MODERNCINÉ is also pleased to welcome to the fest fellow veteran Scare-master Lucky McKee. MODERNCINÉ is proud to screen horror icon Lucky McKee’s: “May”, “The Lost” and “Masters of Horror: Sick Girl”.

MODERNCINÉ’s SCAREFEST 2009 highlights local filmmaking with the screening of the Muskegon made “Italian Zombie Movie” presented by Taco Bell. The Zombies are back and looking for a snack…a free taco for the first 150 people through the door to see the movie. Finally, completing the Scarefest 2009 line up are the Best Short films of the local, independent film festival Thriller! Chiller!

We encourage you to come in costume. Standard movie concessions are available and exclusively for Scarefest – New Holland Brewery Ichabad and Golden Cap will be sold for the day. Andrew van den Houten began his career in front of the camera as a child actor, performing in commercials in his native New York City. While still in his teens, he hosted a pilot for Nickelodeon and was a familiar face on the stand-up comedy circuit in New York City. A film graduate of Boston's Emerson College, he marked his freshman year by producing and co-starring in the independent feature film "Alma Mater", a recipient of the Audience Award at the 2002 Austin Film Festival. Andrew founded MODERNCINÉ during his junior year of college. He has always envisioned the company as an ideal vehicle for showcasing both his own creativity and that of his colleagues. MODERNCINÉ's first film production, "Inherent Darkness and Enlightenment", was also the first at Emerson to be completed on a 35mm print. Andrew served as writer, producer and director.

Jack Ketchum: His first novel, Off Season, prompted the Village Voice to publicly scold its publisher in print for publishing violent pornography. He personally disagrees but is perfectly happy to let you decide for yourself. His short story The Box won a 1994 Bram Stoker Award from the HWA, his story Gone won again in 2000 -- and in 2003 he won Stokers for both best collection for Peaceable Kingdom and best long fiction for Closing Time. He has written eleven novels, arguably twelve, four of which have been filmed -- The Lost, The Girl Next Door, Red, and Offspring. His novella The Crossings was cited by Stephen King in his speech at the 2003 National Book Awards. http://www.jackketchum.net

Lucky McKee is an American director, writer, and actor, largely known for the 2002 film “May” which has acquired a cult following. McKee has also directed “Sick Girl”, the tenth episode of the first season of the popular Showtime TV series “Master of Horror” He directed the movie “The Woods” and produced the film “The Lost”.

Ryan Shore: Scare-master composer Ryan Shore has penned the scores for horror movies including “The Girl Next Door”,” Offspring”, “Headspace”, “Home Movie”, “Jack Brooks: Monster Slayer”, “Shadows”, and the upcoming “Cabin Fever 2”. Ryan's other scores include “Prime”, “Lower Learning”, “Numb”, “Harvard Man”, “Vulgar”, and the upcoming “Stan Helsing”. www.ryanshore.com

Pollyanna McIntosh: Growing up in Portugal and Colombia encouraged an independent spirit in Pollyanna McIntosh from a young age. After her family moved back to their native homeland of Scotland, a modeling agent noticed McIntosh, bringing about a move to London at the age of sixteen. A successful modeling career took her all over the world and soon she had cameos in films such as “The Fifth Element” and Irvine Welsh's “The Acid House”. After graduating with honors in drama and theatre studies from London's University of Surrey she became involved in the London theatre scene both as an actress and director and acted in several independent movies.

Thrliller! Chiller!: "Thriller! Chiller! debuted in October, 2006 as a collaboration between friends, filmmakers and small business owners of West Michigan film production companies, Fulvew Films and UnSAFE Film Office. This fresh faced and forward thinking film festival broke new ground in West Michigan by featuring well made, content driven genre films and reviving interest in cult classics such as Jaws, The Shining and Raiders of the Lost Ark, honoring them all with impeccable screen presentation, appreciation for audience participation and a high respect for the filmmaker themselves and their dedication to the craft.

Offspring / Film Festival News

The film version of Offspring is burning up the film festival circuit. It just won the award for "Best Screenplay" at the Melbourne Underground Film Festival, in Australia.

Next stop is the Oldenburg Film Festival in Germany, where Jack will be on hand, along with director Andrew van den Houten.
